Bathroom renovations are one of the most common makeovers most homeowners start, especially when they first move into their new homes. If you’re planning a shower renovation, there are lots of factors to consider before you start. Today, we’re covering six steps you should bear in mind before your renovation begins.
1. Walk-in Shower vs Tubs
One of the first things you must consider when planning your shower renovation is whether you want a walk-in shower or a tub shower. Typically, it’s a question of space, but your personal preferences also play a part. Walk-in showers are a trendy choice, but they leave you without the option of a bath.
Besides your personal preference, the cost of each might also affect your decision. Bathtubs with overhead showers are typically more expensive than walk-in showers, but some luxury shower stalls and wet room models also run up a high price. Ultimately, you have to decide which option is best for your space and needs.
2. Wall Panels vs Enclosures vs Tiles
When you know which style of bathing facility you want, the next thing to consider is what you’ll use on the walls. Some walk-in showers have enclosures you install around them, often made from glass or PVC. Equally, shower wall panels can work for bathtubs or walk-in showers, acting as a waterproof barrier between them and the wall beneath, preventing mold or mildew buildup.
There’s also the more traditional style of using tiles in your bathroom. Tiles are a highly customizable choice that’s available in many colors and shapes, like squares, rectangles, and hexagons. Deciding which wall covering you want is complex. Tiles are aesthetically pleasing but time-consuming to install, while enclosures are cost-effective if a little bland. Wall panels are also a budget-friendly choice with a luxurious-looking finish to them.
3. Showerhead/Fixtures
Choosing your shower head and fixtures is another aspect of a shower renovation to consider. If your renovation is on a really tight budget, buying a new showerhead can make all the difference in the quality of your showers. There are many types of shower heads to consider, including:
- Rainfall shower heads
- Aerating shower heads
- Dual shower heads
- Fixed shower heads
- Concealed shower heads
The cost of the shower head and the space in your bathroom are the most prominent factors that will likely impact your decision. Other than shower heads, there are fixtures like taps, temperature gauges, and linings. If you have a colour scheme in mind, perhaps fixtures made with the corresponding metal are the best choice for you.
4. Cost
Preparing for the cost of your renovation is crucial. While a shower renovation should cost less, you should always prepare for unexpected delays or issues impacting the project’s final price. Having extra room in your budget for any slip-ups will save you lots of time and stress in the long run.
However much you budget, add an extra 10-20% as leeway as a backup. It’s the easiest way to avoid serious problems with your renovation and keep things running smoothly. Resist the urge to overspend or underspend because of the bounds of your budget. You want to balance high quality and your money sensibly.
5. Contractor vs DIY
Another serious point to consider is whether you’d rather have a contractor do the work or complete the project yourself. If you have the skills and tools to complete the job, renovating a shower is a simple enough DIY project. It might take you a few days of dedicated labor, though, meaning you’ll have to find the time to complete it yourself.
Alternatively, if you hire a contractor, that’s something you’ll have to factor into your budget. Using a contractor with a good rating or that comes highly recommended ensures you get professional, efficient results. However, finding and hiring the right contractor is also time-consuming, so factor that into your plans.
6. Showering While Renovating
Don’t forget to consider how you’re going to shower while your renovation is underway. Some smaller renovations can be done in a day or two, meaning showering might not be an issue. If you’re planning something more extensive, however, how are you going to shower in the meantime?
If you have a second bathroom or a bathtub, there’s a solution, but consider your options if not. Do you have a family member or a neighbor who can help you out? If that’s not an option, maybe it’s worth finding a decently priced hotel for a few nights. If you’re choosing a hotel, remember to incorporate those costs into your initial budget.
